Throwback Thursday: Kate Nash 'Foundations'

Publish date: 2024-07-03

Here at CelebMix, we love a throwback and this week we are throwing it back to Kate Nash’s hit single from 2007, ‘Foundations’.

Who is Kate Nash?

Kate Nash is a British singer-songwriter, musician and actress who rose to fame back in 2007 with her sleeper hit, ‘Foundations’. Nash’s debut album ‘Made Of Bricks’, which features the throwback hit, was released later the same year and featured multiple charting singles. ‘Made Of Bricks’ charted atop of the UK Albums Chart whilst it received moderate success in the US, peaking at number 36 back when it was released. She also received Best British Female Artist at the BRIT Awards the following year thanks to her new-found musical success.

The throwback hit single, ‘Foundations’ peaked at number two in the UK Singles Chart, missing out on the top spot thanks to Rihanna and Jay Z’s ‘Umbrella’ by just slim of 200 copies. During the run of the single, Kate Nash performed at music festivals such as Glastonbury and T in the Park. Nash also made her official debut TV performance on Later… With Jools Holland shortly after the festival circuit.

After her rise to fame, the singer-songwriter also delved into a career of acting by appearing in ‘Greetings from Tim Buckley’, ‘Powder Room’ alongside Sheridan Smith and most recently, she appeared as Rhonda in Netflix’s 2017 show, ‘GLOW’.

How successful was Kate Nash’s career after the throwback hit?

Following her throwback hit, Kate Nash released singles, ‘Mouthwash’, ‘Pumpkin Soup’ and ‘Merry Happy’ to further promote her debut album. Whilst the following singles did receive moderate commercial success in the UK, none of them managed to match the success of ‘Foundations’. This lead Nash to work on a follow-up album which was later revealed to be titled, ‘My Best Friend Is You’.

‘My Best Friend Is You’ was welcomed by fans and critics, with some praising Nash for taking on a completely different sound from her debut album. The lead single from the album, ‘Doo-Wah-Do’ was only released a week prior to the album’s release and peaked at number fifteen in the UK Singles Chart. The follow-up single, ‘Kiss That Grrrl’ received more critical success rather than commercial success.

Following a slow commercial decline, Kate Nash decided to leave her label Fiction Records due to disagreements on the upcoming third album and how it should sound. The singer-songwriter then set up her own label which became known as ‘Have 10p Records’ to self-release her third album titled, ‘Girl Talk’ in 2013.

With a new album came a new sound from Nash as she explored more of a punk-rock sound in comparison to the album’s predecessors. ‘Girl Talk’ also lyrically explored girl power and female empowerment, which is a topic the singer-songwriter has strong views towards.

What is the ‘Foundations’ hitmaker up to now?

As for more recent times, Kate Nash has been preparing for her fourth album release. The fourth album launched as a Kickstarter in April 2017, with Nash pledging to fans for financial support towards the album and in return, fans would get a bundle of the upcoming album. Also in 2017, her debut album ‘Made Of Bricks’ reached its ten-year anniversary since its release. In celebration of the landmark, Nash re-released the album on a limited edition pink vinyl pressing along with a UK tour to support the album.

It doesn’t seem long until we get the fourth album either with Nash revealing the album under the title of, ‘Yesterday Was Forever’ with a release date of 30th March 2018. The upcoming album will feature the singles, ‘Drink About You’ and ‘Life in Pink’.
