Ruel kicks off sophomore EP with 'Painkiller'

Australian teen sensation, Ruel, kicks off his upcoming sophomore EP with single ‘Painkiller’.

When CelebMix caught Ruel’s sold-out show at Paris’ Badaboum last year, a long way away from the 16-year-old’s hometown of Sydney, we wrote, “To be having this level of success at such a young age is not rare in 2018. What is rare, is for someone so young to have the voice that Ruel does.”

As Ruel’s deep vocals open on ‘Painkiller’ and give way to a pop-meets-R&B-meets-jazz bassline, we’re reminded of just why he is so highly spoken of. The single comes ahead of a hotly anticipated second EP, following up on 2018’s breakthrough Ready.

Produced by DJ and mentor M-Phazes (see the two’s ‘Golden Days’ collaboration), Ruel’s growth whilst traveling the world is clear to hear, even as he avoids straying away from that unique sound fans have come to love. String-led with Ruel’s vocals at centre stage, there’s no hyper-produced electropop or over-amped synths that are so well used in pop music here. ‘Painkiller’ sees Ruel carry on doing Ruel.

Coming with a music video of nuclear proportions (no, literally), the singer falls to pieces in a toxic mansion. Next up for Ruel is a lengthy Spring Australian tour, releasing a collaboration with SG Lewis which debuted at Coachella and then that second EP which hits streaming services later this year.
