Cillian Murphy has a black Labrador named Scout that he got in 2016. After living in London for 14 years, he promised his kids they’d get a dog for when they moved to Dublin. He named Scout after a character in To Kill A Mockingbird.

I’ve always loved labradors. They’re so caring and emotionally smart. We walk him on the beach every day. He has the best life.

Murphy has also mentioned that while his kids wanted the dog, he’s pretty much in charge of walking duties. A Tumblr dedicated to Murphy collected tweets on people running into him walking his dog as proof.

Cillian and his dog were also spotted supporting a pro-choice protest in Dublin in 2016.

Cillian Murphy is an Irish actor best known for his collaborations with director Christopher Nolan, playing the Scarecrow in The Dark Knight Trilogy of superhero films (2005–2012) and appearing in the sci-fi action thriller Inception (2010), the war drama Dunkirk (2017) and in the biopic Oppenheimer.

Other films in which he has appeared include the war drama The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006), the sci-fi thriller Sunshine (2007), the sci-fi action thriller In Time (2011), Jozef Gabčík in the war drama Anthropoid (2016), and Emmett in the horror A Quiet Place Part II (2021). Since 2013, he has starred as Tommy Shelby in the BBC crime drama series Peaky Blinders, for which he won the Irish Film and Television Award for Best Actor in 2017 and 2018.

In the early 2000s, Murphy collaborated with Danny Boyle in the film 28 Days Later, which released in 2002. The post-apocalyptic horror drama marked a significant turning point in his career, projecting him into the international limelight. Boyle’s innovative direction enabled Murphy to showcase his ability to portray intense emotions and vulnerability amidst chaos. The film also won the International Fantasy Film Award for Best Film in 2003, emphasizing the potency of their collaboration.

Following the success of 28 Days Later, Murphy partnered with director Christopher Nolan, a partnership that has proven fruitful and enduring. Their first collaboration occurred in 2005 with Batman Begins, where Murphy portrayed the character of Dr. Jonathan Crane, also known as Scarecrow alongside Christian Bale as Batman. His chilling performance in the film earned him a nomination for the MTV Movie Award for Best Villain in 2006. The two teamed up again in 2010 for Inception, where Murphy’s role as Robert Fischer Jr. worked alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, and Elliot Page. The film was a huge success, winning several awards, including the 2011 Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

In 2013, Murphy found a collaborative match in Irish playwright Enda Walsh for the theatrical production of Misterman. Here, Murphy delivered a tour de force performance in a demanding one-man play that showcased his incredible range. The production received rave reviews and Murphy won the Irish Times Theatre Award for Best Actor in the same year.

However, it is Murphy’s partnership with creator Steven Knight in the critically acclaimed series Peaky Blinders that has garnered much praise. Premiering in 2013, the show has since become a cultural phenomenon, with Murphy’s portrayal of Tommy Shelby, the cunning leader of a Birmingham criminal gang, earning him the Best Actor award at the British Academy Television Awards in 2018.
